51. Chart Local Action to Support the Big Picture

Those who lead at the global level create the organizational vision, mission, strategy, and long-range goals. However, these are not formulated on a daily basis. They represent the more special case, less frequent forms of leader direction. More frequently, leaders direct small groups, organizational units, and individuals.

Master leaders know that their course of local action must be congruent with organizational vision, mission, strategy, and long-range goals. They make the daily decisions with global goals in mind. They chart a singular-focus course that supports the larger strategic framework. Local action actually represents the more general case of leadership direction. The natural born leader label goes to those who set a direction that takes the group where it needs to go now and one that helps the group make it over the long haul.

Apply bifocal vision (skill 38) and adjust your sights to keep an eye on the big picture as you lay out any course of local action. Ask yourself how your day-to-day action path affects key stakeholders in your immediate vicinity and in wider spheres of influence. Consider how a move to support one customer group affects the entire range of customers you serve.
